Will there be an Alabama Coastal Cleanup this year???
What about the oil???
How can I help???
These have been the most frequently asked questions over the past couple of months. To the first question I am happy to state, YES. There will be an Alabama Coastal Cleanup this year!
However, for the safety of our volunteers, there will be modified cleanup zones if oil is present along the shoreline. These modifications may include redirecting volunteers to unoiled sites or the outright cancellation of a cleanup zone. We are constantly surveying the situation along the shoreline and these decisions will be made closer to the time of the event. Please check back frequently for updates.
The Alabama Coastal Cleanup will not be an “oil cleanup.” The mission of the Alabama Coastal Cleanup is to provide an educational experience through the removal of marine debris from the shoreline of Alabama. The Cleanup will only focus on the removal of non-oiled marine debris and litter.
Please visit the rest of this website for more information about the Alabama Coastal Cleanup, how you can be a part of this event and for updates to our cleanup zones.
Thank you for your support and concern for the health of Alabama’s coast and waterways. We look forward to having you with us this year for the 23rd Annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup!
Sincerely,
Amy King and Spencer Ryan

About the Coastal Cleanup
Show your support and concern for Alabama’s waterways by participating in the
23rd Annual Alabama Coastal Cleanup scheduled for
Saturday, September
18, 2010 from 8:00 a.m. until noon.
You or your organization can make a difference by
volunteering to clean up our cherished coastal area.
In its twenty-two year
effort to clean up the coast, over
58,000 volunteers
have removed
1,120,000 pounds of trash from
3,500 miles of
shoreline. Join
us this year as we continue to make Alabama the Beautiful!
Supplies are limited. On the day of the
event, come prepared with sunscreen, a hat, gloves, shoes
and lots of water. It gets HOT!
Be sure to Check Out our Tips To Protect Yourself From Heat
Stress section!
Check our calendar for times. Then contact the zone captain for the area of your choice to get involved!
Here are a few safety tips to help "Get the Trash out of the Splash!"
- Drink plenty of fluids!
- Bring sunscreen, a hat and wear comfortable shoes.
- An adult should supervise children at all times.
- Be careful near sand dunes and other fragile ecosystems.
- DO NOT attempt to remove dangerous or heavy items yourself. Mark the location and report back to the zone captain for proper disposal.
